Gutters and roof edges
The edge of the roof works harder than any other part of it. Every drop the field sheds crosses the eave on its way out; whatever a straw-packed gutter cannot carry comes back over it; and in a climate of hard summer downpours and damp shaded winters, the eave is where a covering’s life quietly ends first.
How an edge wears out
The sequence repeats across the region’s housing. A loaded gutter overflows in a heavy rain and wets the fascia; the fascia stains, then softens. On shaded eaves, algae thickens into moss at the bottom courses, holding water against the shingle edges until they lose their granules and their stiffness. Water finds the gap between drip edge and gutter — or the older construction that never got drip edge at all — and begins wetting the first inches of deck. By the time anything shows from the ground, the edge has been wet on and off for seasons.
This is why so many Piedmont roofs read two ways at once: a field with years left and edges that are done. An honest evaluation prices that reality — feet of eave, starter courses, deck edge — instead of averaging it into one verdict about “the roof.”
What keeps edges alive
Gutters cleared on a pine schedule, not a maple one. Drip edge on every re-roof — cheap insurance a lot of the older stock never got. Downspouts that actually move water away from the house. And at replacement, a contractor who quotes the edge work explicitly: on this housing the surprises live at the eaves, and a per-foot price for fascia and deck-edge repair keeps the surprise from becoming a change order.
